John Yachwak Jr. - June 03, 1937 - March 16, 2024

Departed: 03/16/2024 (Chisholm)

Obituary Preview: John Yachwak, Jr., 86, of Hibbing, Minnesota, died peacefully on March 16, 2024, at his winter home in Surprise, Arizona, with family at his side.

John was born in Chisholm, Minnesota, on June 3, 1937, to Mary (Rohach) and John Yachwak, Sr.

In his younger years, “Yach” was a star athlete and the captain of the Chisholm High School basketball team. He was later also captain of the Hibbing Junior College basketball team which went on to compete in the national championship.

During a summer college break, John met his beautiful future wife, Mary Jo, at Choppy’s Pizza in Chisholm. Mary Jo took one look at John’s sparkling blue eyes and, as they say, the rest is history. John changed his major, from engineering to mathematics, and joined MJ at Bemidji State University, from where they both graduated in 1960.

John and Mary Jo married in 1961, and they had one daughter, Ann Marie, of whom John was very proud.

John taught mathematics for over 30 years at schools across the “Iron Range” and retired in 1993 after teaching many years at Hibbing High School. He always rooted for the underdog and encouraged his students to believe in themselves.

John was also a restauranteur, having owned and operated two family Dairy Queen franchises in nearby towns of Virginia and Eveleth, where he wrote his own computer programs in the earliest days of personal computers.

John was passionate about golf and cherished spending time with his golf buddies, including lifelong friends John (“Tingy”) Tingstad, Jerry (“Big Jer”) Erickson, David (“Leppie”) Leppanen, Tim (“Ace”) Gallagher, and Drew Frantsen. He was a founding member of the “Bandits” in Surprise, Arizona, where he organized and ran 65 golf tournaments during his retirement years. He rarely boasted about his five holes-in-one.

As an avid outdoorsman, John enjoyed boating, camping, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, and curling. He absolutely loved his many Canadian fishing trips. John was a lifetime member of the fraternal order of the Elks.

JY was skilled in many hobbies, including drawing, photography, and woodworking. He especially enjoyed making elaborate photo collages of his golf tournaments and of family travels throughout the US, Canada, and Europe. Although at times quite frugal, John was very generous with his time and truly enjoyed helping others.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Mary Jo (McCrady) Yachwak, who was also his loving and tireless caregiver right to the end; and by his dedicated daughter, Ann Yachwak, and her husband (“favorite son-in-law”), Peter Beatrice. John is also survived by aunts Julie (Rohach) Kruchoski and Lorna (Huikkala) Rohach and many cousins.

John was preceded in death by his dear parents and younger brother, David Yachwak.

John will be greatly missed by his family and by his many friends. The family would like to thank the teams at Southwest Kidney Institute and at Cardiac Solutions for the compassionate care provided to John over the past several years.

Departed: 03/15/2024 (Chisholm)

Obituary Preview: Daniel Charles Archambeau, 72, from Chisholm, MN, passed away on Friday, March 15, in Grand Rapids, MN, after battling cancer in the comfort of his home with the support of his loving family.

Dan was born on September 12, 1951, in Hibbing, MN, to James and Martha (Badovinac) Archambeau. He was a 1969 graduate of Chisholm High School. During his high school years, he was a competitive swimmer and enjoyed playing the piano from grade school through his junior college years.

He graduated in 1974 from the University of Minnesota Duluth with a degree in Accounting and held several positions in the mining industry working for Hanna Mining Company and National Steel Pellet Company from 1974 until 2003. Dan did some private consulting, and worked for Irathane and L&M Radiator before he fully retired in 2017.

Dan is survived by his son, Jim of Shoreview, MN; his sister, Jean “Snowflake” Archambeau of Eden Prairie, MN; his two grandchildren, Caden and Grace Archambeau, and his cousins Annette (Patrick) Archambeau and Jane (Chris) Allo of Colorado; his Centa cousins (Frank, Mary Ann, Gerry and Paul) and Badovinac cousins (Jeannie and Mark).

Dan was preceded in death by his parents Martha (2006) and James (2021) Archambeau and his cousin Richard Archambeau (2016).

In his free time, Dan enjoyed golfing, berry picking, fishing, and hunting with his family and closest friends. He was the family outdoor guide extraordinaire who prided himself on finding the best catch or shoot of the day. Dan's love for the little things in life was contagious. From the joy he got being the hunting and fishing guide for family and friends, to getting a bargain on bananas or fishing tackle and buying whatever the store had left. If you spent any time with him you heard a story or two that will live with you forever, but you also created new memories. For those close to him, not only do you remember the experiences, but also his child-like excitement, animated stories, and off the wall comments. Sometimes the simplest things in life can be enjoyed and become memorable, Dan showed us how.

Dan's family will host a memorial service at 2:00 pm on March 29, 2024, at Rupp Funeral Home in Chisholm with Siyanda Elizabeth Officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the chapel. In lieu of gifts, the family prefers the sharing of personal stories of Dan that bring joy. If you wish to make a donation in honor of Dan, here are two organizations he supported: Delta Waterfowl Foundation | delta-waterfowl.org Minnesota Fish | https://mn-fish.com/

Near the top of the list of his favorite things to do was spending hours in the woods cutting the wood that he would use to heat his home.

Stan’s greatest joy was his two granddaughters, Alexis and Isabel. He loved to pick them up after school or “rescue” them from daycare and take them to the park, the library, swimming at local beaches, or McDonald’s for ice cream or a snack. He spent countless hours entertaining them, playing cards, and impressing them with magic tricks. He never missed one of their home basketball, volleyball, or softball games, and he always coached from the sidelines. The girls loved to run errands, help with chores, and just spend time with Grandpa.

Stan is survived by his daughter Stacey (Mike) MacMillan of Chisholm, MN; four grandchildren: Blake (Breanne), Brittany (Steve), Alexis, and Isabel; four great-grandchildren: Anna, Sophie, Blake, and Everett.

He was preceded in death by his parents Eino and Mabel, brother Ernest, sister-in-law Jeanette, sister Elvi, brother-in-law Ted, and son Mark.

Roger Milton Hill - September 16, 1933 - January 13, 2024

Departed: 01/13/2024 (Chisholm)

Obituary Preview: Roger Milton Hill passed away peacefully on January 13, 2024, with his daughter and son-in-law by his side.

Roger was born September 16, 1933, to John and Julia Elvira Hill, in Chisholm, Minnesota. He graduated from Chisholm High School in 1951; and in December 1957, received a B.S. Civil Engineering degree from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. After college, he enjoyed a life-long career with the MN Department of Transportation, retiring in October 1993 as the Director of Technical Support in the St. Paul Central Office.

On June 29, 1957, Roger and Rosemary (R & R) were married in the Chisholm United Methodist Church and started a wonderful adventure – fishing being their favorite hobby. In 1996, they retired to a new home on Prairie Lake. R & R enjoyed almost 57 years of marriage, before Rosemary passed in 2014. They were grateful to celebrate their 50th Anniversary with a party that brought their family and friends together.

Roger, his father, his brothers and other family members were life-long hunters, and in 1966 they built the “Hill Family Hunting Shack” in Cedar Valley. Roger enjoyed 50+ years of the annual deer hunt – building deer-stands, planning drives, and sharing the camaraderie.

Roger was civically minded and was elected to the White Bear Lake City Council and later served on the St. Louis County Board of Adjustment. He was involved in local politics in various capacities (e.g. delegate, election judge) and also served on the Prairie Lake Improvement Association Board for many years.

Later in life, he took an interest in gardening, cooking and baking; becoming semi-famous for his home-made rhubarb, blueberry and cherry pies.

Roger had a goal of reaching his 90th birthday; so we celebrated this milestone with a party at his home at Real Life Cooperative (RL) with his adopted RL family, who he grew to love and cherish.

Roger was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rosemary Hill and other family members, including: Parents John and Julia Hill; Siblings Hilda (John) Svigel, Leonard (Donna) Hill, Reino (Ruth) Hill, Floyd (Susan) Hill, Kathleen (Michael) Chambless & step-brother Fred (Marilyn) Tuominen.

Roger will be forever remembered and missed by: Daughter, Kelly Robinson and her husband, Michael Robinson of Prairie Lake. Son, Jay Hill and his wife, Sheila Wewers of St. Paul. Granddaughter, Kennedy Hill, partner Josh and their children – Caleb, Damian, Evelyn, and Phoebe. Grandson, Hunter Hill. Roger is also survived by his sister, Trudy Henning (Myrel) and brother Gary Hill; sisters-in-law Ruth Hill, Susan Hill and Marilyn Tuominen; brother-in-law Michael Chambless; and many other relatives and friends.

Roger was humbly proud of his Finnish heritage and exemplified the Finnish concept of “Sisu”. While difficult to translate, some say it’s a magical quality comprised of stamina, courage and perseverance. Roger faced life’s challenges with this fortitude and grace, and it was fitting he was listening to the Finnish National Anthem, when he slipped away.

In death, Roger’s pacemaker was donated to the Iowa State University Veterinary School, to better an animal’s life. Both R & R were dog lovers and would be happy to know he helped an animal in need.
