Drawing a soccer field is, without a doubt, the easiest thing you will get to draw. This is because the drawing itself is very straightforward and has no complicated areas. You simply need to make sure that all the aspects of the field are proportional. Let’s first take a look at what a soccer field is.

The soccer field is the playing surface for the game that is associated with soccer. It is also referred to as a football field, pitch, or simply as a pitch. Although not all soccer fields are the same, the standard size of professional pitches is 105 meters (115 yards) by 86 meters (74 yards). Some pitches can be bigger, while others, like the one in your school, maybe smaller. With that out of the way, let’s take a look at how to draw a football field.

How to Draw a Soccer Field

As you learn how to draw a soccer field, you will learn a lot about the pitch. This is because our goal is to turn you into a great artist and help you understand what you are drawing. In today’s lesson, we will be drawing the pitch from a bird’s eye view. This is the easiest way of drawing a soccer field. Once you understand what is needed, you can advance your drawing by tackling it from different angles.

Before we start, we encourage you to understand the diagram below keenly. It includes the steps we will be taking when drawing the soccer pitch. Studying the steps will help you anticipate our steps and avoid restarting the drawing all over.

Step 1: Draw the Sidelines and the Endlines

The first thing we are going to draw is the perimeter of the soccer pitch. The perimeter has the sidelines and the end lines. The sidelines are the longest sides of the field. There is a sideline on each side of the soccer field. When the soccer ball goes over a sideline, the restart is usually a throw-in.

If Team A causes the ball to go out-of-bounds, team B will restart the game by having one of the players throw the ball onto the pitch. The player who throws the ball has to do so while outside the pitch and using both hands to hold the ball over his or her head.

The end lines are the lines on the short ends of the field. The restart is usually a goal kick or a corner if the ball goes out of bounds. This will depend on which team causes the ball to go out-of-bounds. Did you already know these facts? If you didn’t, now you know something new. Let’s get back to our lesson.

We are going to start with our drawing paper horizontally because the football pitch is a horizontal rectangle. Use your ruler to draw a rectangle that covers the entire space on your drawing paper. The rectangle should be as proportional as possible.

Next, we need to add another rectangle inside the first one. The inner rectangle will now form the perimeter of our soccer field. The space between the two rectangles will be the space around the pitch.

Step 2: Draw the Goal and the Goal Area

On both sides of the pitch, there is a goalpost. This is placed at the center of the end line. Players try to shoot the ball into the opposing team’s goal in order to score. The width of the goal is just 8 yards wide. This means it is pretty small. The front end of the goalposts sits on the end line while the net is in the back. For that reason, we are going to add a small vertical rectangle on either side of the end lines. This should be in the middle of the end lines, as shown in our illustration below.

Immediately after the goal is the goal area, usually a small box; the area is designated for the goalie (goalkeeper) from where he or she can kick the ball back into play. A standard goal area is 6 yards from the goal and 20 yards wide. Use your ruler to add a vertical rectangle immediately after the goal. Do the same for the other side of the pitch.

Step 3: Draw the Penalty Box

The next thing we are going to add is the penalty box. This is a larger rectangle that surrounds the goal area. Moreover, any offense to the opposing team while in the penalty box will lead to a penalty kick.

To add the penalty box, draw a vertical rectangle that sits in the immediate area around the goal box. The rectangle should start from the end line and extend slightly into the field. Do the same for the other side of the field.

Next, we are going to add the arc on the outside of the penalty box. Use a semicircle for this. Your drawing should now look like this.

Step 4: Draw the Center Spot

The center spot, also known as the center mark, is the marking at the exact center of the soccer pitch. The center is used for kickoffs. When a soccer match starts at the start of each half, the ball will be placed in the center spot. The ball is placed at the center after a goal has been scored.

The first thing we are going to do is draw a vertical line that cuts the pitch in half. Next, from the center of the field, we will add a circle. The circle will serve as the center of the soccer pitch. Don’t make the circle too big. You should also add a spot at the center of the center spot to indicate where the ball will be placed during a kickoff.

Step 5: Draw the Corner Arc

All the corners of a football pitch have arcs. These arcs are usually about a yard in diameter. The corners are used for corner kicks, which happens when a player kicks the ball over the end lines when defending. When the corner kick is awarded, the opposing team places the ball within the arc and kicks to the other players or directly to the goal.

To add the corner arcs, we are simply going to add semi-circles on the inside of all four corners of the pitch. Here is what our drawing looks like.

Step 6: Refine Your Drawing

It is perfectly okay if we choose to leave our drawing as it appears above. However, since we want to be great artists, we are going to advance our drawing by adding one crucial detail: color.

Color Your Drawing

Soccer fields usually use the color green. This is because the color of grass is green. Even where synthetic grass is used, using the color green in different shapes will bring the soccer field to life.

In our drawing, we started by using a light shade of green to trace along all the lines we drew. You can use the color yellow if you want. Next, we added streaks across the length of the soccer field using two shades of green. This gave our drawing the signature look of a professional soccer field.

In our drawing, we started by drawing a rectangle to serve as the perimeter of our pitch, then added another rectangle inside the first one to form the sidelines and end lines. We then advanced our drawing by coloring it.
