The Abyss- crafting and getting the essence pouches
Big thanks to Jbui8000 for LOTS of help with this guide.
General:
Recommended combat level (crafting)-
To survive in the abyss, I recommend that you would have at least 55 defence and 55 hit points, to make sure that you can take the damage that the abyssal creatures can deal. Without having to eat.
However, abyssal crafting for lower levels is a possibility. In this case, I strongly recommend that you take one piece of food (lobsters or better) for every 10 hp that you have (e.g. hp 50 is 1 piece, hp 40 is 2. etc.) less than 55.
However, I recommend also that anyone above the level of 90 to take caution of the player killers surrounding the abyss (the average player killer around that area seems to be 90-126) by taking Dragonhide amour to wear on the way to the abyss (to make binding/freezing magic harder for the mage player killers) or to take the alternative route. However, this alternative route may also be guarded, so be cautious.
Recommended combat level (killing)-
To kill the abyssal creatures, I recommend that you have at least 60 hp, and either 70 mage, 70 range or 65 attack and strength (depending on combat style). I also recommend a defence level of 40 for rangers, 40 for mages (or 20 with good food) or 60 for mêlée. If you have a pure account or don’t train defence, just bring lots of good food (in this case, swordfish or better)
Getting to the abyss:-
Method 1 (walking)
Teleport or walk to Varrock. Make sure you have your Edgeville dungeon key with you. Enter the Varrock entrance to the Edgeville dungeon (located directly west of Varrock West bank).
Method 2 (teleport and walk)
If you are on ancient magic, teleport to Padewwa (requires 66 magic) and follow on from here.
Carrying on from both:
Go through the dungeon and climb up the ladder at the other side. This will take you to the south of Edgeville town.
For the mean time, go to the bank and withdraw the relative armor, weapons and other resources. Then skip ahead to the relevant part of this guide (killing or crafting)
Inhabitants-
There are 3 monster types in the Abyss. Here is a small bestiary for all 3:
Abyssal leech (level 41)
Risk: Low

Max hit: 2, mellee attack
Pic:
Abyssal guardian (level 59)
Risk: High
Drops: same as Abyssal leech
Max hit: 22, ranged attack
Pic:
Abyssal walker (level 81)

Crafting
Many people craft in the abyss for experience in their runecrafting level. Even though the chance of getting killed are high, the rewards are worth all the trouble.
Usually, people craft natures, chaos, or laws in the abyss. You can get about 1.2k runes per hour!
What you should wear while crafting in the abyss:
Warrior Helmet (may be exchanged for a mystic hat or archer helmet for better mage protection)
Amulet of Glory (optional)
God Cape (or obsidian cape, but this is not recommended- worth too much if lost)
Rune Pickaxe (may be exchanged for an rune wc axe)
Full D'hide (green or better)
Elemental Sheild (or dragnfire-sheild; mage protection)
Boots of Lightness (Boots of Lightness can be obtained while doing the Temple of Ikov Quest)
Ring of Life (optional)
This is only recommended equipment though, you may choose whatever suits you most.
It takes a certain level to use a pouch. However, the abyssal creatures drop all four pouches no matter the runecrafting level. ONLY ONE OF EACH POUCH MAY BE POSSESED AT ANY ONE TIME.
Anyone can use the small pouch. The small pouch holds 3 rune essence and, you only need level 1 runecrafting to use it!
This is the medium pouch. You need 25 runecrafting to use it and it holds up to 6 essence.
This is the large pouch. You need 50 runecrafting to use it and it holds up to 9 essence.
This is the giant pouch You need 75 runecrafting to use it and it holds up to 12 essence.
Alright, so this would be my inventory on crafting in the abyss according to runecrafting level:
Level 75 Runecrafting+:
Level 50 Runecrafting+:
Level 25 Runecrafting+:
Level 24 Runecrafting and under:
Just to make a note, the ectophial is optional, but recommended for a quick escape. If you choose not to use it, it can be replaced for another essence or food. When you go to the altar of your choice and make the runes, remove the glory and rub it to go back to Edgeville to repeat the process.

Law Rift - You must have no weapons or armor with you or you can't enter.
Death Rift - You can't enter if you have not done the Mourning's End - Part 2 Quest.
These rifts are in the abyss, but are for a later use. In other words, you can't enter these rifts yet until later.

Ways to get into the inner ring
As you can see, the abyss has two rings, the outer and inner ring. In order to get into the inner ring, you have to do something about the things blocking it.
You can do four things. Mine the rock (which is the most common), cut the tendrils, fool the eyes, try to get through the gap, or burn down the boil. I recommend doing what you like best. There is also another way called "Passage." You can just go through it without failing, unlike the others.
Passage:
Mine the Rock: (Pickax) (Mining)
Cutting the Tendrils: (Hatchet a.k.a. Woodcutting Ax) (Woodcutting)
Try and Fool the Eyes: (Theiving)
Getting through the Gap a.k.a. Squeezing : (Agility)
Burning down the boil: (With a tinderbox) (Firemaking)
This should cover everything about crafting in the Abyss.
Obtaining the pouches by killing the denizens of the abyss
What to take:
IN the inventory, you should take:
Teleport runes (unless you have an amulet of glory or other teleport method)
20+ pcs of Food (BETTER than lobsters)
Rune armour is optional to take in your inventory (CAUTION: put on INSIDE the abyss, not going to it)
Prayer potions, super sets etc. are optional. I dont see the point in pray pots (sharks or other food eliminate the need for them). However, if you want to take a super set or another pot, thats fine as long as you have good food to make up for the loss of inventory space
Sample inventory:
And what to wear:
Gloves, boots, helmet and amulet are optional
Ring of life is strongly recommended (protection from pkers and just in case you are overpowered in the abyss itself)
Dragonhide armor (protection from abyssal mage pkers, also relatively cheap if you loose it)
Cape optional, but cape of legends is useful
Fast weapon (whip not recommended due to risk from pkers. I recommend a dragon dagger or scimitar. If you take a dagger, poison is useful)
Shield optional, but I don’t take one (weighs too much, shortens running time)
Sample equipment:
Here I have only taken the bare minimum.
Getting there:
Teleport or walk to Edgeville
Run north quickly and look if there are any pkers guarding the mage (if there are, switch worlds)
If there are not, run towards the mage, right click him and select the “Teleport” option. This will teleport you straight into the abyss and directly into the mist of the abyssal creatures.
Please note that the abyss is a multi-combat zone, and that it is possible to be attacked by up to 15 simultaneous monsters at once, meaning it is extremely dangerous to kill here.
In the abyss:
Here is the map for the abyss’ outer circle:
Once in the abyss, you are faced by three different types of monster: Abyssal walkers, abyssal guardians and abyssal leeches. All three of these drop all 4 of the essence pouches, all the talismans (excluding law and death, but including elemental), noted and unnoted essence, clues (lv2, dropped by all), binding necklaces and ashes (100% of getting these). The drop rate of the pouches is all the same with each monster, so I recommend you kill the abyssal leeches (they only have 10hp and hot no more than a 2). If you are trying to collect talismans, I recommend the Abyssal walkers, NOT the guardians. This is because the walkers tend to hit no more than a 7 at 56 defence, whereas the guardians have hit double 11s on me regularly (they have double attacks, like the dragon dagger special).
If you decide to kill the leeches, there is one particular space to the north of the abyss’ outer ring (on the map, it is the northernmost abyssal leech spot). Leeches come in one or twos here, and it is a lot easier (in some places, 10 or 12 leeches attack simultaneously). Here is a screenshot of me in that particular spot:
Rewards:
By the end of the second visit, I had all 4 pouches (note: only 1 of each pouch may be possessed at one time).
Here is a screenshot of the total loot (excluding essence and the talismans lower than chaos. I did not see the point in keeping these drops) that I had gathered after 4 trips:
